Summer Music Faculty
Here is the amazing Faculty for Summer Music Camp 2025

Festival Winds
Dr. Cynthia Johnston Turner
Odds were against Cynthia Johnston Turner becoming a musician let alone a professor of music and conducting in higher education. Born in a small town in Ontario, Canada, no one in her family played an instrument or sang, although there were rumors that her great paternal grandfather was an accomplished mandolinist. Cynthia asked for a piano for Christmas when she was 8 years old, and because it was all her parents could afford, she received a toy electric keyboard from which she was pretty much inseparable until she started the ukulele in grade school. When she picked up the clarinet and saxophone in middle school, a love affair and a career were born.
The first in her family to attend university, Cynthia received her Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education from Queens University, a Master of Education at the University of Victoria, and a Doctor of Musical Arts (Conducting) from the Eastman School of Music. She has received numerous teaching, research, and leadership awards in Canada and the United States.
Cynthia was appointed Dean—Faculty of Music at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario July 1, 2021. She leads a school of approximately 400 undergraduate and graduate music majors with programs in traditional conservatory programming coupled with innovative programs such as the Bachelors, Masters, and PhD in Community Music, and Artist Diplomas in Opera Performance, Chamber Music, and the soon to be launched, Master of Music in Collaboration, Creation and Curation (MMC3). She also oversees the Laurier Academy of Music and the Arts, a community-based school serving hundreds of children and their families in the region.
Before her appointment as Dean, Cynthia was Director of Bands, Professor of Music, and Artistic Director of the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble at the Hodgson School of Music, University of Georgia where she conducted the Hodgson Wind Ensemble, led the Master and Doctoral programs in conducting, provided strategic leadership in diversity, equity, and inclusivity initiatives as well as innovative curriculum, and oversaw the entire band program including the 400+ member Redcoat Marching Band. The Hodgson Wind Ensemble performed at the College Band Directors National Association National Convention in 2017. Prior to UGA, Cynthia was Director of Wind Ensembles at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. She was recently appointed as Artistic Director and Conductor of Festival Winds of “Summer Music at Saugeen Shores.”
Cynthia has guest conducted bands, new music ensembles, and orchestras professionally, at several universities and conservatories, and state honor bands in the United States and abroad. She continues to actively promote commissions by todays leading and emerging composers around the world with a focus on underrepresented voices. She has been invited to present her research with teaching and technology, innovative rehearsal techniques, and service-learning and music performance at numerous conferences nationally and internationally. She is published in such journals as Interdisciplinary Humanities, International Journal of the Humanities, Music Educators Journal, National Association for Music Education "Teaching Music," NewMusicUSA.org, Journal of the World Association of Bands and Ensembles, Fanfare Magazine, and Canadian Winds, and has recorded CDs with the Innova and Albany labels.
Cynthia has served as a board member with the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) and is an active member of College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), Conductors Guild, College Music Society, Humanities Education and Research Association, the National Association for Music Education, and the American Bandmasters Association. She currently serves on the board of the Western International Band Clinic (WIBC) and is faculty at WIBC University. She serves on the advisory boards of the Institute for Composer Diversity (composerdiversity.com), Lift Music Fund (liftmusicfund.org), and United Sound Music (unitedsoundmusic.org). She is an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi and a National Arts Associate member of Sigma Alpha Iota. Cynthia is a sponsored clinician with Conn-Selmer.

Aiden Playfair
The Summer Music Society is sad to announce the passing of Mike Grace on March 13. He has been the long time master of the Summer Music Jazz program. He will be greatly missed but his spirit will live on in the program. His entry remains here as a tribute to him.

Director - Summer Music Jazz Program, Improvisation, Bass and Sax
Mike Grace
Mike Grace has been a professional musician most all of his life. From playing with Dixieland and Country & Western bands in Texas to touring the world with his trio or quartet Mike has made performing classical and jazz music his passion. Along the way Mike found an excitement in teaching and when asked by former university colleagues to join the local faculties he readily began a career in teaching with the same passion he had for performance.
Combining university and public school teaching allowed Mike 35 years in music education, all the while continuing a vigorous performance schedule covering many parts of the world. His college and university students as well as his high school graduates became many of the worlds finest performers and teachers. It is difficult to separate Mike's teaching and performing accomplishments as they are so melded together.
Among Mike's most treasured moments in education is being named a Disney-McDonalds Performing Arts Teacher in 1996. And, being named University of Michigan Musical Society Educator Of The Year, the year after retiring from the Ann Arbor, Michigan, Public Schools make these two honours highlights of his professional life. But, the Community High School Jazz Program will alway remain his favourite educational accomplishment, a program of many combos which rose to a level of over 300 performances annually, winning almost every award at jazz festivals world-wide.
Among the many performers Mike has had the great fortune to perform with are Dave Brubeck, Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Torme, Rob McConnell, Roger Williams, Urbie Green, Billy Taylor, Clark Terry, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Henry Mancini, Jimmy Forrest, Peter Appleyard, Randy Brecker, Rosemary Clooney and Sonny Stitt.

Instrumental
Perrin Grace
Brooklyn based musician Perrin Grace has offered an array of talents and skills as a bassist, band-leader and disc jockey. A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Perrin immediately took part in as many musically related extra curricular activities as possible, both officially and otherwise. By the age of 13 there was not a day spent without an instrument in hand or music on the mind. No matter the genre there was always a performance on the horizon and the resulting gratification was addicting to say the least. By the age of 18 it was time to go to college and drop the juggling act as captain of the high school golf team, mock trial competitor and participant in more bands than one could count.
After completing his Bachelors from the University of North Texas Perrin leaned in to developing his co-led group AMP Trio along side Addison Frei and Matt Young. This group, now in its twelfth year has been the cornerstone of Perrins creative outflow after releasing 5 records, organizing numerous tours across the US, Canada, China and Japan and working alongside renowned artists such as Tahira Clayton, Drew Zaremba, Tim Green, John Raymond and Quamon Fowler. Performing at high profile venues BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, Washington D.C. Jazz Festival, Jacksonville Jazz Festival and many more AMP Trio brings a rich take on jazz in the modern era. With a sixth EP recorded AMP Trio is excited for an upcoming release and tour, for when they come together to perform it is a magical experience felt by all.
Along with passionately contributing to AMP Trio Perrin enjoys a broad spectrum of musical work and play offered by the many scenes in the New York City area. From the late night jazz jam sessions where players comes to sharpen their edge to the corporate world of providing
the best musical services for any occasion. He’s been fortunate to follow his dreams of performing or recording with some of his musical heroes such as Benny Bennack III, John Riley, Amina Figarova, Takuya Kuroda, Jake Hertzog, Michael Mayo, Sirintip, Zach Brock, Glad Hekselman and performing at renowned NYC venues such as Smalls Jazz Club, The Jazz Gallery and 55 Bar, crossing paths with legends long established and up-and-coming.
More recently Perrin has pursued some unexpected passions as well. To start, Perrin took up learning Japanese after taking many trips to Japan and seeing the unending appreciation for his gift of jazz and culture. To deepen his message he spent 3 years in an intense daily study of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Eventually his efforts led to an in-Japanese interview for NHK Radio. There he spoke on his cultural exchange with the coastal city of Ofunato, Japan and how AMP Trio dedicated their record “Go Naive†to the city as a blessing to their continued recovery after the great tsunami disaster of 2011.
Over the past year with the night life of New York City reopened Perrin has been enjoying Brooklyns electronic music scene, catching DJs as they spin underground house and techno through top notch sound systems to ecstatic dance floors under a dazzling lighting display. An environment perfectly suited to the most visceral of intentions. With his long experience as a performer and drive to provide meaningful experiences, Perrin is excited to continue his development as a selector of great music to bring people together.

Vocal
Vanisha Gould
Vanisha Gould came to New York in 2015 from Simi Valley, California. Inspired by artists like Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, Carmen McRae and Ella Fitzgerald, Vanisha has successfully curated her own sound as a composer and band leader. Performing originals and music from the Great American Songbook on several groundbreaking stages both in New York and overseas, she aspires to continue sharing her voice with audiences in New York and beyond.
From the National Public Radio(NPR) website posted Dec 12 2024
Two of the best jazz vocal albums released this year, against stiff competition, were the work of Vanisha Gould, who combines a blues cry with a storyteller's point of view. Life's a Gig presents her in sparse yet fully furnished dialogue with pianist Chris McCarthy, who reappears on She's Not Shiny, a set of playful and pointed original songs. These are Gould's first solo albums, and they introduce a major talent. Youtube link here
